Head Coach's Report Sunday 22nd November

A bit late with the write up this week folks, apologies for that.  The snow saw us try a new format for Sunday's training. Even I couldn't be evil enough to have the skiers doing outdoor fitness and press-ups, so we had a full training session of skiing for everyone.

It always surprises me how much better dry mat is when it's covered in snow and how much more eager the skiers are to get out on the hill. Let's hope for much more.

Skiers always love to see the first snow of the season, so spirits were definitely high. I even saw fresh tracks all the way across the football fields and the jump was definitely getting its share of attention.

We had to be a bit creative with the groups this week, due the change in format, but we'll return to the regular groups for next Alford session.

This week the coaches heads were held high as Kenny managed to regain the crown as the fastest on the mat. It was a close call though with Beth W following closely behind.

Of course the group races were hotly contested and, being on snow, I was very impressed with some of the race lines being taken. Every week the competition is becoming closer and I'm always impressed by the enthusiasm of the racers, all the way to the end of the session.

This week, the skiers were still challenging each other to races as the coaches were pulling the gates at the end of the session. There has to be winner though and this week the honours went to my very own team. Well done to all.

We had a couple of announcements at the start of the session. Congratulations to James Paxton for being awarded the SSS Volunteer of the year. A coveted award that goes a long way to show the commitment of James. Also great for promoting Gordon Skiers to other race clubs throughout Scotland.

Graeme also gave us a reminder about this coming Sunday's trip to Braehead. The timing of last Sunday's snow couldn't have been better preparation. We'll have 5 coaches and an excellent training session at Braehead. There will be gate training for all, as well as open hill training. I'd love to see the parents on the hill too and even giving the gates a try. It's a very relaxed atmosphere and perfect weather conditions, so don't be shy to get the skis on. If you don't want to try the gates, why not ask a coach for some tips, or joint in with some of the group activities.

Looking forward to Braehead, Gary W
