Training Sunday 26th February 2017

A Little One Ski Skiing Demonstration From Beth! : )
Sunday night training saw heavy rain, rainbows and sunshine.

We had a good turnout of 26 trainees tonight working with 4 coaches- Callum, Stuart, Andrew and James. The theme of ‘cross over’ and starting to pressurise the outside ski early was continued from previous weeks. Down the centre of the slope all the groups were working on variations of a drill to promote the cross over whilst on either side of the slope there was a very tight suicide course and a cross over suicide. The weather didn’t dampen the spirits amongst the trainees or coaches tonight and some good work was witnessed from all.

To finish off the session we had the usual dual slalom races with some very competitive head to head races – having a photo finish could have been useful for some of them.

Kizzy S had a slightly nasty tumble and took a knock to the face but we wish her all the best and hope to see her back on the slopes shortly.

Reminder- Mid Week Training on Wednesday 7-9pm at Alford is planned for this week. Please email racing@gordonskiers.com to confirm your attendance.

Best wishes

Midweek Training, Wednesday 1st March

Numbers are healthy for Sunday session this week and we are hoping the numbers will continue to stay high for when we aim to return to Alford on Wednesday for our mid-week training session.

We have Alford booked for 7-9pm on Wednesday which forms part of our winter mid-week race league as well as some focused race training in the first part of the session. It is open to members for £10 a session and non-members at £12.50 a session- from our youngest to our more ‘mature’ members. Parents this the ideal time to brush up on your racing skills so that you are on top form for next year’s Christmas races and kids this is your chance to keep training and stay ahead of your parents.

We need to confirm to Alford on Tuesday whether the session will go ahead and we ideally need roughly 20 trainees to make it a successful session.

If you would like to come along on Wednesday, remember open to anyone, or know someone that does want to come along then please email us at racing@gordonskiers.com by Tuesday 12pm to confirm.

As ever a final call email will come out on Monday evening to gather any last minute names.

Regards

Wednesday Night Crew.

Training Sunday 26th February

Unfortunately ‘Doris’ didn’t really hit the Cairngorm area and Glenshee and The Lecht didn’t receive a huge amount of snow last night and today. The forecast is for milder weather tomorrow and Saturday with strong winds (causing a potential hairdryer effect) so at this stage it is unlikely we will manage to get snow training.

HOWEVER we do have Alford booked from 4.30-6.30pm on Sunday so this will be our training option for this weekend unless we see a significant load of snow falling tomorrow. We really need members to confirm if they plan to attend training session and not just turn up otherwise we end up cancelling sessions.

If you would like to attend the training session this Sunday at Alford from 4.30-6.30pm then please email racing@gordonskiers.com if you haven’t already done so.

A ‘final call’ email will follow on Saturday morning for any last minute stragglers.

All the best

Cairngorm Races Cancelled / Training Sunday 26th February

The mild winter and lack of snow has continued to disrupt the season with the Cairngorm Open Race this coming weekend now being cancelled as per the posting below from Cairngorm Ski Club.

"CSC Hilton Coylumbridge cancelled Mon 20 Feb

Further to the ongoing snow conditions and the snow loss that we have experienced over the last few weeks, I would like to confirm that this year’s race for 2017 is to be unfortunately cancelled.

This is, as I am sure you are aware, is a decision we would not like to have to make, however due to the lack of snow and also having to make the responsible decision for all participants, including based around FIS Regs, also including Health & Safety guidelines, such as a lack of snow depth, snow coverage and Piste conditions, along with giving all entrants enough advance notice, we need to ensure that we make a valued and informed decision that the race is to be cancelled.

Jules Jennings
Race Convenor
Cairngorm Ski Club"

With this event being cancelled and the lack of snow and a settled forecast we are looking to run training at Alford on Sunday evening. The exact times may be dependent on the number wishing to attend but it will be roughly 4.30-6.30pm (we will confirm the exact times and programme once we know training numbers).

The training sessions are priced at £6 per hour per trainee. We will amend all the ‘accounts’ at the end of the season and make refunds/request payments where necessary.

Please email racing@gordonskiers.com to let us know if you would like to train on Sunday 26th.

Regards

GDN Committee and Coaching Team.

All existing entries for the Gordon Skiers Open event will be automatically moved forwards to the revised dates .

The new fees will be £25 for BASS and £15 for Bairns.

If you can make the new date then we look forward to seeing you on 18th March. The partial refunds will be organised after the event in case we have to cancel and therefore refund more fees. We appreciated your cooperation in what is proving to be a tricky season so far.

Entries are now reopened so if you know of anyone who would like to enter then please let them know.

Hopefully that keeps you update for just now but we will be in touch with more news and updates as the event gets closer.

Training Tonight, Wednesday February 8th CANCELLED

Morning All

We have had to take the decision to cancel tonight’s training due to a number of members being away for an early half term or preparing to go away at the weekend.

There is no mid-week training next week and it will resume on 22nd February depending on numbers due to the Schools Events being run that weekend too.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

February Half Term Camp

Good Morning All

The snow is finally starting to arrive with some more forecast for today/tonight and some more later in the week as well.

At this stage we have decided to continue with the preparations for the Camp running at The Lecht on Monday 13-Wednesday 15 Feb. I have attached the flyer again for those who may be interested and haven’t already signed up. We still have plenty spaces available.  There are a few of you who I believe we were waiting to see which days you could do so you haven’t been included in the numbers yet. If conditions don’t improve this week then we will aim to make a call as early as possible to allow you to arrange other things for next week and a refund will be given.

Any questions please just ask.

Regards

James

Alford Night Slalom! (Training Sunday 5th February 2017)

Tonight saw 30 Gordon Skiers trainees attending a session at Alford slope with coaches James, Jamie, Alex and Andrew. The groups were split into 3 using the usual groupings and there were 3 drills set up across the slope. The groups rotated, with their coaches, round the drills of ‘suicide course’ , ‘ suicide with offset’ and pole jumpers.

Each skier had a good number of runs on each drill and improvements were being made each run. We then cleared the slope of athletes to allow the coaches to reset a cross over dual slalom course which everyone competed on against fellow trainees roughly at their level. It was great to see some of the Performance Squad members taking on some of the development kids and being ‘fair’ to them. Great club atmosphere again tonight.

The moment of the night was when Vicky R caught an edge in the dual slalom and ended up heading straight towards our photographer Paul , narrowly missing taking him out, and then continuing onto the poma track before skiing across the grass to re-join the slope.

Wednesday Night Training, 1st February 2017

Despite an utter absence of snow and the inconvenience of prelim exams momentum is continuing with the Wednesday training. Andrew led the coaching consolidating on the skills acquisition. The course set provided the athletes with a replica of the gate set on the last third of a slalom course. Over the last three weeks the athletes have skied courses set to give them all phases of gate combinations they will encounter on a slalom. The technical issues on the timing have been resolved.

Once again the competition was fierce on the timed runs with Ollie taking the lead in a 4 way heat with James, Andrew and Hamish all within 0.5seconds. Slightly further down the field we had some tight times between Michael and Josh as well as two of our younger girls competing neck and neck with each other with Emily beating Louisa by 0.14seconds.

Name Time 1 Time 2 Time 3 Combined Rank Points
Ollie Baillie 6.87 6.6 6.4 13 1 100
