Alford Ski Slope had a louder buzz than the Men's World Cup GS at Beaver Creek this weekend. Marcel Hirscher may have turned the snow to steam, but I'm sure I saw sparks fly from the mat today from some of the racers.
Gordon Skiers welcomed Aberdeen Snowsports Club to our mat today for the hottest ski competition the North of Scotland has seen in decades.
The Performance skiers started the day with some challenging drills with Alex and Gary and a suicide course, to make sure their legs were up to the job and the boots were turning quickly. At one point I saw Alex's teams doing synchronised Tic-Tacs down the slope
The Development skiers were being challenged by John and we were all glad to see Malcolm back to push the skiers. (on his wedding anniversary too)
Jamie and James were working with the other Development teams on some high end extension and compression in the turn. All challenging stuff and I can honestly say I'm seeing fantastic improvements in the skiing this year.
I've often been questioned about skiing by people wondering if it's a dangerous sport. I can now, hand on heart, say it's not nearly as dangerous as gate judging. Malcolm made an amazing recovery today, to get round the last gate on one ski, only to be encumbered by Heather on the finish line. Heather has now got her name down for racing next week as it's the safest place to be. Poor Heather. I hope your not too badly bruised.
So....The Racing. Tensions and spirits were high today. What an event to be able to run over a 6 gate course. We had 9 teams of 6 racers, all racing relay style, with the whole team having to cross the line to take the win. Jamie's team were on fire and didn't drop a race. Team 2 (my team) were sooooooooo very close behind in second with Callum and Duncan's team taking a close third. Well done to all. Even with the press-up challenge thrown into the mix, the result of the racing didn't change.
The individual timed races, always a favourite, were also hotly contested today. Well done to all the prize winners. Especially the young girls. Daisy took the honours (and will get her medal next week) with Autumn in second and Eva taking the Bronze. Well done girls. Great to see the new members taking the prizes.
Please remember, it's the club Xmas lunch next week, after training and I'd love to see you ALL there. It's another fun event and a great way to round up the pre-Winter Season.
As ever, get back to me if there are any questions, suggestions or feedback you'd like to share.
See You Next Week, Gary W
