The Bairn's Bucket, delayed for weather earlier in the season, took place on Sunday 19'th at the top of Cairngorm Mountain. The day started off a bit door and driech, but the sun was soon blazing down on our 8 racers, coach and temporary coaching assistant. We had a great support and attendance from parents too and it seemed all were having fun, both skiing and supporting.
Special mention for this race goes to our only girl to enter. Well done to Dashing Daisy Cowie. All the kids had 3 runs, with the best run counting. Each of Daisy's runs was better than the last with her 3'rd run leaving clean carve lines down round the gates. With the softening snow however, it was her second run that was the fastest. A well deserved 6'th place to Daisy and a sure fire sign that she's on for better performances next season.
We also had 5 boys in the under 10's.
- Nathan Smith
- Ben Whatford
- Josh Allardyce
- Lennon Allardyce
- Ruaridh Rogerson
From these we had 2 of the boys on the podium. Nathan Smith was the Star of the day taking Gold with a convincing win. Young Ben Whatford was a second behind and took the bronze. What a great podium for Gordon Skiers and I'm sure these 2 young lads will be pushing each other on for many years to come. Well done lads.
In the under 12's we had Daniel Lints and Ryan Pye. This was a hotly contested category and Ryan did well to make the top 10. Daniel wasn't too far behind with 3 solid runs.
Our skiers did really well with no DSQ's or DNF's. Cairngorm did a very good job of laying on the race and I saw lots of the parents heading off for a wee slide. I even managed to reminice down the Cas for a last run of Spring, just before prize giving. We even managed to squeeze another Gordon Skier down the course as forerunner. Our very own double Scottish Champion, Beth Whatford, set the pace for the younger racers before helping out as coaching assistant, keeping the racers on their toes with energetic warm ups and coach reports.
As Head Coach I'm very proud of the season we've had and the achievements of all our athletes. I've definitely seen the bar raised, both in training and racing and it's been great to have been part of it all. I promise to do a full season report at some time.
A big thank you to the coaching team of John, James, Ali, Kenny, Jamie, Malcolm, Alex, Ian C, David A and Andrew C. I believe we're all returning next year and I hope to see you all at the ceilidh.
That's the final report for the winter season. All the Best. I'm off for a glass of wine.
