Training Sunday 22nd March

Evening All,

I'm afraid with the warm temps tomorrow and the receding snow at the Lecht, training is not going to be beneficial or worthwhile this weekend.

We considered the option of training at Cairngorm, but the majority were not in favour of making the trip.  As such, the only decision is to cancel training this weekend.

Let's hope for a change in the weather, so we can return to training as soon as we can.

Many Thanks,

Gary W

Scottish Childrens Championships, Nevis Range, March 14th & 15th

As well as training at the Lecht this weekend, we also had 12 racers over at Nevis Range in Fort William, competing in the Scottish U14 and U16 Championship.

2 days of exciting racing were completed, under blue skies. The courses were very challenging, with the race pistes being (best described as) very firm.

Lecht Training Sunday 15th March

Training went well, we only had 7 kids with 3 coaches so that meant they were getting pretty good feedback. A course was set on the right hand eagle in the morning and everyone skied it pretty well. A much tighter course was set beside it in the afternoon and all managed to get down that, with some practice, as well.

The snow base was becoming very thin down the bottom and for most of it we were pretty much drilling into ice which made it extremely difficult to take the stubbies out at the end of the day. Over all it was a good day, but without more snow the training days at the Lecht will be limited.

Training Sunday 22nd March, Your Views Please

The forecast suggests we may still have, limited, skiing available this weekend at the Lecht.
What's the general feeling?

The benefit to the older skiers will be extremely limited, but we can't only lay training on for the younger skiers. Cairngorm is still holding well, but it may be too far to travel. Glenshee is only opening to sell tickets to poor unsuspecting visitors that believe the reports.

I'm veering toward not making training available at the Lecht, but am open to hear all opinions.

Replies to Nicky on admin@gordonskiers.com .  We need to make a decision soon to allow Gary to arrange coaches if we are to go ahead at Cairngorm.  Please let us know if you would wish to travel to Cairngorm for training or whether you would prefer not to train.

Committee Meeting Tuesday March 10th

A few points from this weeks committee meeting.
  • Disciplinary Procedure.  Whilst we have a code of conduct for our skiers we do not currently have any disciplinary procedures laid down for those that breach the code.  Next season there will be a disciplinary code involving yellow and red cards!  Details to follow.
  • Race Training Course.  A number of members attended a Race Officials Training Course in Aberdeen run by Snowsport Scotland.  This is to prepare parents to fill the various roles required at races. Snowsport Scotland have agreed to us rolling out the course to our members and it is intended to do this in a series of bite size pieces during the coming dry slope season in the autumn.
  • Ceilidh.  We have booked Westhill Golf Club on Friday May 29th for our annual ceilidh, we will be looking for some volunteers to help organise this. Please contact Nicky on administrator@gordonskiers.com if you wish to volunteer your services
  • AGM  Provisional date for our AGM is Friday 19th June.  Please put this down in your diaries.  It is important that we get a good turnout and it is your opportunity to influence the running of your club. The venue will be announced shortly.
  • Exemptions.  If you wish to claim exemption from snow training fees due to injury or absence at races or squad training please claim now, the form can be accessed from the form page of this site.  The form closes on March 31st to allow the treasurer to sort the refunds. No forms will be accepted after this date.

Scottish Championships:- Important Notice

Just in case any of you have not heard, here is the email that has been received from Neil Ross re the Scottish Childrens Championships.

"I am pleased to confirm that the races are planned to go ahead at Nevis Range  this weekend providing no serious adverse weather prevents us from doing so.

Unfortunately due to the restrictive snow conditions the Bairns Bucket has had to be postponed. This is hoped to be re-scheduled for a weekend in April  at Cairngorm snow permitting."

So ONLY the CHILDREN will race  this weekend at Nevis. The Bairns races have been postponed until further notice. (They may happen on Cairngorm in April)

So, for Gordon Skiers........
  • The Children will be supported for the races on Nevis, this weekend.
  • The Bairns will train as usual at the Lecht, so long as it's open. I'll confirm that as soon as I can.
Please let me know if there are any questions or if any of this is unclear.

Many Thanks, Gary W

Video From Last Sunday 1st March

David Alexander has kindly shared this video from last Sunday.  Filmed at the end of training, skiing the Harrier and the area to the left side of it, skiers, Hamish Alexander, Ryan Pye and Iain Campbell

Head Plant of the Day!

Award for head plant of the day has to go to Ryan Pye!  James apparently also tried to demolish a snow fence but I missed that one!  Hannah Morrison came in a close second, see below.  All survived the experience.

Gordon Skiers Courchevel Training Camp

An amazing week of weather and snow in Courchevel was enjoyed by 12 skiers on the recent camp.
Each morning was spent skiing the whole mountain with the afternoon training gates on the World Cup 1850 Stade.

Day one and 2 we trained in bumps and off piste, with the afternoons spent in Slalom gates. Day 3 and 4 we switched to the bigger mountain and trained GS in the afternoon.

All the skiers also entered GS and SL races with the Gordon Skier's taking top honours in every race. Particularly well done to Andrew Simpson and Rachel Brown. Top boy and girl in every race. Andrew S even managed to beat the pace setter on one of the GS races.

In the SL race out of 84 entries, 73 finished. Only 10 medals were won and the Gordon Skier's took 8 of them.

Well done to all.

The week built to a grand Finale when the team made the Couloir Telepherique look like a walk in the park.If you've never seen this the off piste route, it's 40 degree pitch with a very exciting entrance from the very top of the mountain.

There's always a special mention and this one is for Ellie Green. In only her third snow season, Ellie cruised down her first couloir, with a proud Dad capturing the action (from the bottom) on video.

The camp seemed to go well. Let's see what happens next year.

SSBX 2015

Glenshee Skier Cross

What another great weekend of racing in Glenshee. Even though the wind provided us some challenging conditions, the Gordon Skiers put in some impressive performances.

A full day of individual Qualifying on Saturday set the racers up for a day of elbow to elbow racing for the finals on Sunday.  Four racers at a time took on the course and the racing was very close.

In the U12's Nathan Smith took home the gold with Jamie Liversidge close behind in Silver. Top performances from both young men. Ben Whatford also made the final, but lost his third place close to the line to finish in 4'th. Very nearly a full Gordon's podium.

The girls U16 was a full Gordon's podium. Ruby Still took the gold whilst Beth Whatford came from the back to hold the Silver position, with Rachel Brown in Bronze. Morven Douglas made it to the wee Final and took the win for 5'th place.

A welcome return to racing for past member Connor Douglas (Morven's brother) He also made it to the final and was in third position, but took a tumble at the last feature. Unlucky Connor, but a well deserved 4'th.

Scottish Childrens and Bairns Bucket Sat 14th and Sun 15th March / Training Sunday 15th March

Scottish Childrens and Bairns Bucket Sat 14th and Sun 15th March/ Training Sunday 15th March

Entries are closed but late entries may be accepted, we support this event and would urge as many competitors to compete as possible. Details can be found at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzM6322coom8eTRxRzhuSmVmSXc/view

To try and simplify things for those who have both children and bairns, training for all those not racing on the Sunday will be over at Cairngorm - the whole club is moving lock stock and barrel!

We are looking at having a club meal on the Saturday night- times and location are not firmed up yet.

As usual please let James ( racing@gordonskiers.com ) know if you are entered into the races AND also if you would be interested in joining the club for a meal and James can then liaise firmer details as they progress.

Cheers,

James
